fundraising through the end of august, barack obama has raised 147 million, or 34% of his primary dollars of people who gave under $200. these are people mostly going online or respond to text messages or being hit by campaign aides as he walked precincts. and these are nations, depends on the month, but they average in 15, 20, $30 range. but it adds up to an enormous amount of money. romney so far this cycle, in a moment where you would think there's a lot of grassroots, has been really disappointing among small dollar donors. but more disappointing than john mccain was in 2008. arguably a more difficult year for republicans to get their base going. he is raise $40 million, or 18% of his take country and -- the reverse is happening. barack obama is actually, is raising less money this time than he did in 2008 as a sitting president for people to max out on their donation. in 2008 it was $2300 the max to give. this cycle is $2500. but so far through the end of august obama has raised $70 million, or just 16% of us all from that group. romney on the other hand is incredibly good at

46.7 million people on food stamps. that is up 46% since president obama took office. unlike the republicans, i wouldn't go out and say, you're the food stamp president. i would say, president obama i understand the food stamp program was growing under the former administration as well, but you didn't stop it. and you added more and more people to those rolls. not because you want them to be on food stamps, but because your economic policies fail. that's why they're on food stamps. you haven't done right by them. you say you're for the middle class. you say you're for the poor. actions speak louder than words. i would repeat that over and over again actions speak louder than words. i'll show you another mom. the poverty rate. in 2009 it was 14.3%. but keep in mind this is during the recovery. you can't blame this on bush. 2010, the poverty rate is higher 15.1%. in 2011, 15%. 46 million people in this country are now suffering poverty. now you say wait a minute, now if the recession isn't necessarily president obama's fault but he has all these people in poverty, how does that wor

hundreds of millions of dollars worth of attack ads, especially in swing states, that the obama campaign has spent painting mitt romney as some kind of insensitive clueless bank accounts at the cayman islands kind of guy, and he wiped all that away. and also, i think it was pretty clear that for the first time, the president was put on the defensive as far as his record is concerned. and that's because of this bubble he's been in for the last four years and he obviously couldn't defend it. finally, piers, i thought one of the seminal moments in that debate was near the end, when jim lehrer talked about the lack of bipartisanship, the lack of sitting down together and averting this fiscal cliff that most americans know we're headed towards, and mitt talked about being governor of massachusetts, reaching across the aisle, having to negotiate, et cetera. the president's responses, sometimes you have to say no to people. is that, you know, and the fact is first two years, as mitt pointed out, first two years of his presidency, they just rammed things through without a single republican vote.

fundamental claim. president obama said he created five million jobs, mitt romney says not so much. let's look at the evidence. this is what the country looked like in 2009, president obama's first full year in office. every state that looks brown out here is a state where they were losing jobs at the time. some of them very badly. look at ohio over here. 10.6% unemployment. gradually over the next few years we saw jobs come on and education and in health care and in business services and retail. and now look where we are today. every state that is lighter in color is where there are either no longer losing jobs or in most cases gaining jobs. ohio, 7.2% unemployment now. that is better than the national average. the bureau of labor statistics says to make that happen we had to create a lot of jobs. how many? by their count, 4.4 million so far. but here's what's not mentioned much, 4.3 million were lost during the bad days. so the net gain is only about 125,000 jobs. that falls short of the president's claim he created five million jobs. it's just a little bit too much of a stretch. we hav
